This Encyclopedia of Sacred Music box set published in 1968 contains eight 7” 33 rpm:
The Jewish Traditions (Disc 1), The Christian Traditions: Gregorian and non-Gregorian Chants (Disc 2), Liturgic Chants of the Russian Tradition (Disc 3), Christian Traditions: Huguenot and Lutheran (Disc 4), Islamic Traditions: Call to Prayer and Ceremony of the Mevlevi Dervishes (Disc 5), African Traditions: Central African Republic (Disc 6), Traditions of the East: India (Vedic, Qawwali, Tamil) and Buddhist Traditions from Japan and Tibet (Disc 7), Other Eastern Traditions: Japanese Buddhism, Chinese Taoism, Shinto (Disc 8).

The Russian Orthodox chants we share here were recorded in Paris, which hosts many Russian Orthodox churches, and welcomed some 250,000 Russians refugees fleeing the 1917 October Revolution who brought along their culture and religious traditions.

The program of short tracks features Liturgical chants in unison (A1), Liturgical octave chants (A2), Liturgical chants with two voices – thirds and fifths (A3), Liturgical polyphony with 3 voices with dissonant harmonies (A4), Parish style chants for 4 mixed voices (B1), Cathedral style chants for 4 to 8 mixed voices (B2), and Monastic chants for equal voices (B3). The performers here are Ensemble Liturgique de l’Institut Saint-Serge, Paris, conducted by Nicolas Ossorguine (A1-A3, B3); Nicolas Kedroff, Evgeny Evetz and Nicolas Evetz (A4) and Ensemble Vocal de la Jeunesse Russe à Paris conducted by Evgeny Evetz (B1,B2).

Thank you João for sharing this stunning box set.

The annual international Shiraz Festival of Arts, held in Shiraz-Persepolis from 1967 to 1977, offered a unique global program of cross-cultural encounters and discoveries, featuring music, dance, drama and film. The breath of their concerts, for example, spanned the traditional world (Iranian music, Japanese No music, African music, Vilayat Khan), Western classical music (Martha Argerich, Arthur Rubinstein), the modern avant-garde (John Cage) and Jazz (Max Roach and Abbey Lincoln).

This panorama of classical Persian music was recorded during the 1971 Shiraz Festival, which celebrated the 2500th anniversary of the founding of the Persian Empire with great pomp.

The LP showcases delicate, timeless solos by virtuosos Ahmad Ebadi (1906-1993) on setar lute (A1), Hoseyn Tehrani (1912-1974) on tombak drum (A2), Asghar Bahari (1905-1995) on kamanche bowed string (B1), and Lotfollah Madj (1917-1978) on the long-necked tar lute (B2).

Yoruba singer Haruna Ishola, who originally trained as a goldsmith, formed his first group in 1947 and was the established King of Apala by the 1950s. This brilliant album – particularly Side B – features the dazzling interactions between iyalu talking drums, agogo bells, sekere rattles and a large agidigbo thumb piano behind Ishola’s poised, mellifluous voice and nimble backing vocals.

This well-recorded LP is a stellar example of a glorious Islamic-influenced Yoruba musical tradition, whose golden era was between 1930s-1970s.

Following our presentation of the formidable singer Hirabai Barodekar (1905-1989) in a previous post (HMV 7 EPE 1205), we now present her in a riveting jugalbandi (literally translated as ‘entwined twins’) duet with her younger sister Saraswati Rane (1913-2006). The two daughters of Abdul Kareem Khan (1872-1937), the founder of Kirana Gharana, weave illuminating circular flights that radiate balance, depth, and imagination. They are accompanied here by Narayanrao Indorkar on tabla.

This excellent record from Ocora’s legendary first series captures authentic griot music recorded in different parts of Senegal. Griots play a major role in West African cultures and societies by passing down the oral tradition and history, as well as music and poetry. Griots’ unparalleled musicianship, knowledge, storytelling, charisma and praise singing are an essential part of Senegalese celebrations and ceremonies.

These bards, who hail from a special caste of musicians, are also seen as being outside society, paradoxically both despised and greatly feared for their eloquence and wit and their purported occult powers.

The LP includes Soundioulou Sissoko (1921-1994) (A1), one of the most celebrated Senegalese kora players of the 20th century (like Lalo Keba Drame, whom we showcased in a previous post); kora and singing (A2); drumming (A3, A10, A11); gourd playing (A4, B5, B6); women singing and drumming (A5); one-string bowed violin (A6); men singing (A7-A8); xalam luth (A9, B7, B8); and singer Mariam Kouyate (B1).
